“There but for the grace of God go I.”
A great many have heard this saying, but it means different things to different people (depending upon whether the person is a Christian or whether the person is caught up in the ways of the world).
This well-known saying has been twisted by the world to mean what the WORLD wants it to mean.
Even today, many are familiar with this saying (often attributed to John Bradford).
The world most often applies this saying to the MATERIAL THINGS OF THE WORLD or one’s standing in the physical world (such as, after seeing a homeless person or a person who is in prison).
“There but for the grace of God go I.”
While the world continues to say “the grace of GOD,” the world often attributes the person’s better circumstance to LUCK or GOOD FORTUNE or BETTER UPBRINGING rather than GOD.
(There) but for the grace of God (go I)
used to say that one could be in the same bad situation as someone else
There but for the Grace of God go I
- A recognition that others’ misfortune could be one’s own, if it weren’t for the blessing of the Divine, or for one’s luck.
- Humankind’s fate is in God‘s hands.
- More generally, our fate is not entirely in our own hands.
Usage notes:
- This proverb is an expression of humility; in using it, a speaker acknowledges that outside factors (such as God‘s grace, or one’s upbringing) have played a role in one’s success in life.
- Used also to express that one cannot judge others for their flaws for we are all equally flawed.
The Christian believer, on the other hand, knows this expression applies to himself and ANYONE else who does not believe and is not eternally saved.
The Christians believer never forgets his memories of what it was like before his life was transformed by Jesus Christ.
The Christian believer vividly remembers when HE was deceived–as is the rest of the world.
The Christian believer strongly remembers when HE believed much as the unbelievers now believe.
The Christian believer sharply remembers when HE was held captive by the world and its many stories.
The Christian believer KNOWS that, if not for the grace and mercy of God, he would be relying on his own resources, deceived about how much he knew and how the world REALLY operates.
The Christian believer KNOWS that, if not for the grace and mercy of God, he would be shaking his fist, mumbling about his bad luck–instead of leaning on the Creator of All, who controls everything.
The Christian believer KNOWS that, if not for the grace and mercy of God, he would also be just as deceived; just as lost; just as foolish and wicked as those he now tries to assist in saving.
“There but for the grace of God go I.”
The Christian believer knows it applies EXACTLY to his own present circumstance.
And he never forgets it.
It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
