Of all of the various accounts contained in God’s Word, some of the most thought-provoking have to do with a creature named LEVIATHAN.
LEVIATHAN is a sort of very destructive, very EVIL sea serpent; in some passages, the description of LEVIATHAN sound very much like what is written about DRAGONS.
The creature makes its first appearance in the Book of Job, where God demonstrates His mastery of ALL things by His mastery of LEVIATHAN.
“Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down? Canst thou put an hook into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a thorn? Will he make many supplications unto thee? will he speak soft words unto thee? Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant for ever? Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens? Shall the companions make a banquet of him? shall they part him among the merchants? Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish spears? Lay thine hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more. Behold, the hope of him is in vain: shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him? None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me? Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine.”
“Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round about. His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal. One is so near to another, that no air can come between them. They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot be sundered. By his neesings a light doth shine, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out. Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot or caldron. His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth. In his neck remaineth strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before him. The flakes of his flesh are joined together: they are firm in themselves; they cannot be moved. His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone. When he raiseth up himself, the mighty are afraid: by reason of breakings they purify themselves. The sword of him that layeth at him cannot hold: the spear, the dart, nor the habergeon. He esteemeth iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood. The arrow cannot make him flee: slingstones are turned with him into stubble. Darts are counted as stubble: he laugheth at the shaking of a spear. Sharp stones are under him: he spreadeth sharp pointed things upon the mire. He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment. He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary. Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear. He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride.”
–Job 41:1-34
The scene from Job is a VERY gripping account.
Psalm 74 mentions LEVIATHAN and God’s handling of him is just ONE of His marvelous works–which man has NO hope of matching.
“For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth. Thou didst divide the sea by thy strength: thou brakest the heads of the dragons in the waters. Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces, and gavest him to be meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness. Thou didst cleave the fountain and the flood: thou driedst up mighty rivers. The day is thine, the night also is thine: thou hast prepared the light and the sun.”
–Psalm 74:12-16
Psalm 104 also mentions LEVIATHAN, as one of the God-created beasts which tower over man–but NOT over the God who created him.
“O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches. So is this great and wide sea, wherein are things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts. There go the ships: there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein. These wait all upon thee; that thou mayest give them their meat in due season.”
–Psalm 104:24-27
Finally, LEVIATHAN’s ultimate fate is declared by the LORD in Isaiah’s 27th chapter.
“In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.”
–Isaiah 27:1
It has been maintained by more than one person that LEVIATHAN is really Satan (one man says, “a TYPE of SATAN.”) From what little is written about LEVIATHAN, that argument could be made.
FIRST, LEVIATHAN is described as a type of SERPENT.
SECOND, LEVIATHAN is MUCH stronger than man, who appears to be his chief opponent.
There are three verses from God’s Word which support this view.
The first is a little stretch, but the other two are not. The first is from Job 41:18.
“…his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.”
Compare this with what was said of Lucifer in Isaiah 14. Specifically, that Lucifer >is called “the son of the morning.”
“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!”
–Isaiah 14:12
A stronger case can be made for LEVIATHAN being SATAN from the last verse in Job 41.
“He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride.”
–Job 41:34
[‘Bible scholars’ have written that Job 41:34 is referring to all the great animals of the earth. Okay.]
And lastly, God’s question in Job 41:4 points to LEVITHAN being more than just a monstrous animal.
“Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant for ever?”
–Job 41:4
It can be argued that words aside, Satan is one the most dependable servants of God.
And THAT is what is known about the beast called LEVIATHAN.
WHAT information did the reader PREVIOUSLY possess of Leviathan?
It is not YET too late: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
