Upon seeing an obituary recently, a few thoughts preceded the main thought.
1- When, as a boy, the newspaper was brought to the parents, the first thing BOTH did was turn to the obituaries. When they were asked WHY?, they both said they were looking to see if anyone they knew had died. At the time, this seemed a bit on the morbid side. However, over the past four or five years, this writer has noticed the same behavior in himself. Scanning the obits takes no more than a few minutes and then it’s off to the sports and other sections of the paper.
2- Obituaries are probably the last opportunity the deceased has to influence the living–both those he knows and those he does not.
3- The obituary announcement is probably the last opportunity for those close to the deceased to influence those people who did not know the deceased. There is no other explanation for so many “beloved” and “adored” sprinkled throughout the announcement.
And on to the main thought.
Happening upon an obituary of a person this writer did NOT know, a few facts seemed to leap off the page.
The deceased was 79–not young, but definitely not very old–and the deceased’s wife was said to have been “by his side at the end.”
Again, though 79, the list of those who had PRECEDED the deceased into death seemed lengthy.
A son.
A stepson.
Two daughters.
Two granddaughters.
A few other friends and acquaintances.
The list of survivors was short: his “loving” wife.
So, in a relatively brief time, death was a frequent visitor to this man and to those who were near and dear to him.
This prompted a few other thoughts.
So, why all of the death visited upon this one man’s family?
Could there have been other reasons for this?
Could it have been avoided?
Was what the man gained equal to what he lost?
One obituary.
Many thoughts and questions.
It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
