The Struggle Between Awareness and the Distractions of the World

awareness

In the times in which we live, the following phrase (or something akin to it) is often overheard:

“I feel as if something is not right, but I can’t put my finger on it.”

This thought is overheard so often that

  1. It appears to be a common one;
  2. The thought appears to be common to a great many people; and,
  3. The concept of “something is wrong but I don’t know what it is” is so common and makes so many so uneasy that they express this uneasiness in words out loud in a public place.

These feelings of near-anguish have been likened to a “pebble in the shoe of your mind.”

IF so many feel “something is wrong,”  the question naturally becomes “Then why isn’t anything being done to remedy the situation (assuming the situation causing the unease can be identified)?

One answer is that the modern world has become quite adept at creating distractions to move the focus off of whatever modernity might be causing this week’s dose of anxiety.

These distractions range from mere amusements (computer games, crossword puzzles, movies, TV, computers) to obsessions concerning a person’s career or work to any of the many modern trivial pursuits of which modern man has been convinced are important (sports, activities of one’s children, extracurricular school activities, hobbies).

These regularly-provided distractions–many of which are incorporated into daily routines–offer the comfort of SAMENESS: the assurance which is to be had in the many small repetitions which make up so much of modern life.

These many small trivial pursuits help dampen the feelings of unease which are a regular part of the modern world.

In fact, one can almost boil it all down to a few simple equations to help one remember.

  1. UNEASE = AWARENESS = SEARCHING FOR AN ANSWER TO THE UNEASE
  2. DISTRACTIONS = DEADENING THE SENSES = TEMPORARY RELIEF FROM UNEASINESS

One can usually determine how aware one is by 1- the amount of undiscovered uneasiness one suffers; 2- whether one has chosen to combat this uneasiness; and, 3- HOW one chooses to confront this mental discomfort.

Since most moderns do not have the wherewithal to determine or confront their uneasiness, they turn to the many distractions the world offers to while away their time and to do so in a manner which (temporarily) offers relief from their anxiousness.

A very few turn to the only source of combating anxiety: the Bible.

Though the world greatly discourages the decision to consult God’s Word for answers, there are still a few who do.

And there are a few who are delivered from their nagging feelings of uneasiness.

In the reader’s life, is distraction OR uneasiness winning?

How uneasy is the reader?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
