GOLD: Valuable Because the World Says So

“Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.”
–1TIMOTHY 6:17-19

Over the weekend, a conversation was entered into about things of value: what men consider valuable in this life.

The conversation got started when one of those involved related the story of a man he knew who had buried a great quantity of U.S. currency “for a rainy day.”

This revelation provoked mostly scorn among the listeners.

“What’s he gonna do when the dollar is declared out-of-order  and no longer acceptable?

“He better dig that up and buy stuff with it NOW while it’s still worth something!”

“You ever ask him if his rainy day takes American Express?”

“What’s he gonna do if inflation makes a loaf of bread cost $100,000?  It happened in Germany between the World Wars and it happened in Zimbabwe just a few years ago.”

At one point, someone asked why the man didn’t put the money in a bank and then bury a bank card?  That way, if anyone ever found his buried treasure, they couldn’t use it: ONLY he could.

It was offered that “I think his whole idea was to avoid having to deal with a bank.”

That person THEN asked,

“Well, what is he supposed to do if he wants to make sure he’s got money for when bad times come?”

Three people (almost all at the same time) then jumped in with the same reply: “Gold!”

“If he was smart, he’d dig up that money and go buy gold with it and bury the gold!”

“Gold’s always gonna be worth a lot of money!

“Gold’s been valuable for centuries!  Tell him to get some gold!”

About this time someone pointed out that during the Great Depression, the U.S. government declared that it was ILLEGAL to for anyone to own gold.  So, for over 40 years, it was illegal for an American to privately own gold in the USA–unless that person was a jeweler or someone who worked with gold.

[This information throws cold water on the many, many survivalist/preppers who advise hoarding gold for use during a time of great trouble.]

“All they’d have to do is declare gold illegal to own.  That wouldn’t be so hard to do: it’s already been done once before.  THEN, everyone who had buried gold would really have really buried NOTHING. Back then, the US government gave Americans one year to sell their gold to the US government AT A PRICE DETERMINED BY THE GOVERNMENT (The US then turned around and sold all of the gold they confiscated to other countries for TWICE the price it paid for the gold). After that one year was up, if an American got caught with gold, the government not only took the gold, they put that person in prison! The only reason gold is valuable is because those in control SAY IT IS. IF they say something different tomorrow, well, then, gold won’t be very valuable. ANYTHING of value in this world is valuable BECAUSE man says it is.  IF man says something different tomorrow, then what is valuable becomes worthless.  Look at what happened to Confederate money during and after the Civil War.”

THIS prompted the exasperated response.

“Well then…what are you supposed to do?”

It was THEN that it was offered what God’s Word–specifically, Jesus–has to say about storing up money, cash, gold and other valuables.

“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
–Matthew 6:19-21

It was THEN explained that Jesus was saying wherever one stores (lays up) his treasure, that is the place where that person’s focus will be.

IF one hides gold or silver or cash or other valuables in a hole in the ground, THEN that person’s focus is on this world.

Which means that person is lost.

IF one follows after the commands of God and Jesus, he will be laying up treasure in heaven–and that will be where that person’s attention is. Which means that person will be eternally saved and will be enjoying the many flavors God’s salvation has to offer those who are saved.

OF COURSE, if one is deceived and doesn’t believe in God or the kingdom of heaven, there’s little to be done.

Not too long afterwards, the discussion moved on to other things and then later concluded.

DOES the reader believe that gold will “always be worth a lot of money“?

DOES the reader believe that, if he ever became wealthy, he would buy some gold “for a rainy day“?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
