About this time of year, one can hear a lot of chatter from well-meaning–but hopelessly lost and bewildered–folks.
There are TWO phrases which seem to be repeated when one is stuck for something to say if the conversation lags.
ONE of these is “Well, you know, Jesus IS the reason for the season!”
The OTHER is the one which will be addressed in these pages: some comment having to do with “…your ‘Christmas spirit’”
“Where’s your Christmas spirit?”
“You need some Christmas spirit!”
“A little Christmas spirit will take care of that!”
Anyone uttering these phrases–or ANY which refer to the ‘Christmas spirit’–has NOT put much thought into the acclaimed ‘Christmas spirit.’
There most certainly IS a spirit of Christmas: it is a spirit of deception.
Americans revere (worship, hold sacred) many things which are dark and dreary, but which have been taught are light and cheery and innocent.
Some of those dark and dreary things they hold dear pertain to the customs, practices and rituals of that Season of Greed we call Christmas.
—The Spirit of Christmas is the Spirit of Deception
Christmas and Jesus Christ as two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT things altogether.
This can be demonstrated in a number of ways.
We will examine just a few.
1- Jesus said,
“So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.”
–Luke 14:33
Jesus taught that the things of the world will set a snare to entangle all who are not wary.
Someone who exhibits ‘Christmas spirit’ is likely one who has put considerable time into figuring out exactly what trinket, bauble or doo-dad a person would like to receive as a gift.
And trinkets, baubles and doo-dads–as well as more costly items–are things of the world.
“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”
–1JOHN 2:15-16
The upshot is that you have an ENTIRE SEASON (a portion of the year) devoted to the very things which the person on which that season is supposedly focused, WARNED MAN REPEATEDLY.
2- God’s Word declares–and Jesus is God–that a child will end up being as he has been taught.
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
–Proverbs 22:6
A great many children have been raised in the Christmas-is-a-time-of-gifts school of thought: this is covetousness ( “eager or excessive desire, especially for wealth or possessions“).
The reader undoubtedly knows some children who cannot contain the spirit of covetousness they have been taught: the parents of these children allow the children to open a present each day for several days before Christmas.
The spirit of Christmas is all about gifts, coveting those gifts (‘Make out a list.’) and the thrill of possessing something one has expressed a desire for.
The spirit of Jesus was diametrically opposed to this.
“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon [wealth]. Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?”
–Matthew 6:24-25
The spirit of Christmas is all about–regardless of what many people might claim–ACQUIRING stuff.
3- Jesus was all about honoring His Father, working for the kingdom of heaven and serving others.
“Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.”
–Luke 12:37
The spirit of Christmas?
Not so much.
All the reader has to do to verify this is to think of how many she knows who wait on others and praise God before men BECAUSE it is the Christmas season.
IF one has the ‘Christmas spirit,’ then one probably is doing the very things the Bible frowns upon.
To warn against this deception is to be labeled a “killjoy.”
Ho ho ho.
MORE: The Spirit of Christmas is the Spirit of Deception
DOES the reader usually attempt to get into “the Christmas spirit”?
DOES the reader ever put any thought into what it actually means to acquire the “Christmas spirit”?
It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
