Occasionally, one finds that there has been controversy of which one has NOT been aware.
On rare occasions, one finds that this controversy had taken place in the Sunday social clubs we call ‘the churches“–and yet, though one TRIES to keep up with all of the happenings in those social clubs, one is USUALLY surprised when a controversy is discovered of which one was NOT aware.
And so it was that someone who WAS a member of those who congregate in the ‘churches,’ asked the following question about a week ago.
“What do you think about Christians celebrating holidays?”
“What do you mean?”
“A lot of people don’t celebrate holidays because they say that they are pagan celebrations. What’s your take on it?”
It was then mentioned that my ‘take’ was the same as what was written in God’s Word.
“One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.”
–Romans 15:5
As far as most holidays being celebrated by moderns once being PAGAN HOLY DAYS?
“It’s like Christmas: it is NOT the birthday of Jesus Christ. BUT, it a day when the world AT LEAST PRETENDS to honor Jesus. I figure that deserves to be a day that Christians can celebrate.”
And the controversy?
“So this is a discussion that’s taking places in the churches? Whether to observe holidays if they were once pagan?”
“Oh yeah. I’ve heard more than one argument on the matter.”
“Amazing!”
The ONLY holidays mentioned in the Bible are the Jewish feast days: Passover, First Fruits, Day of Atonement, Pentecost, etc.
What was God’s view of the whole holiday thing?
“Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them. And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.”
–Isaiah 1:14-15
[It should be mentioned–as it was in that recent discussion–that the word “holiday” come from “holy day.”]
Now, it should also be mentioned that one does NOT have to celebrate those ‘holidays’ which are OVERTLY pagan or satanic in nature (such as Halloween).
STILL, it seems important to keep the 2nd half of Romans 15:5 in mind.
“Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.”
–Romans 15:5
Do NOT celebrate holidays because ‘Everyone else is doing it.’
Do NOT celebrate holidays because you get a day off from work.
Do NOT celebrate holidays because the day is a “free day” on which you feel you can do anything you like.
DO celebrate holidays because you have thought on the matter and because–after thinking–you are FULLY PERSUADED as to what you are going to do.
DOES the reader have any thoughts on the topic?
It is not YET too late: there is still a LITTLE time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
